Enjoying the Good Weather!



It was a beautiful day yesterday at my Virginia foster home, and I enjoyed wandering around a little bit. I am doing well!  And tomorrow is my first heartworm shot. Here are the details from the American Heartworm Society's protocol:

• Administer appropriate heartworm preventive • Administer first melarsomine injection, 2.5 mg/kg intramuscularly (IM) • Prescribe prednisone 0.5 mg/kg BID first week, 0.5 mg/kg SID second week, 0.5 mg/kg EOD for the third and fourth weeks • Decrease activity level even further: cage restriction; on leash when using yard.

I am not looking forward to any of that, but I am looking forward to being heartworm-free!  Please keep me in your thoughts tomorrow.  Thank you!  And keep coming back to check on my blog.

When I first arrived at my foster home, I wasn't sure what was going on.  I had been a stray, and then ended up in a shelter in South Carolina, and then traveled to Virginia to my foster home.   Lots of changes in a short period of time.  There were three other dogs in my foster home, and I was nervous!  When they would come close to my expen, I would growl.  Not every time, but sometimes.  Enough growling, though, that my foster mom thought when my time comes to be adopted, I should be the only dog in my forever home. Now, I wouldn't mind being the only dog in my forever home. I will tell you that. I wouldn't mind having all the attention and all the belly rubs.  I don't really need to be with other dogs. But my foster mom has been watching me with the other dogs in the house.  And I haven't growled at them for weeks!  They seem like pretty good dogs to me, and I like them.  So now my foster mom says it is OK if my forever home includes other do

Ups and Downs

Since my first blog post, a lot has changed in the world!  You can tell by this picture, though, that I am taking COVID-19 in stride; I am relaxing in my foster dad's arms. I know I am in good hands here in my foster home.   I have had a few ups and downs over the past few weeks.  Sometimes I have some trouble with my rear right leg.  My vets have checked me out carefully, and I am on some new medications that are really helping!  Because no one knows what happened to me the first twelve years of my life (since I was a stray in South Carolina), it is hard to know if my leg trouble is due to an old injury or something else.  Anyway, the good news is I am doing better! This Friday I go back to the vet for my next heartworm tablet.  For those who don't know, when a dog is heartworm-positive like I am, I have to take my monthly HW tab at the vet to be observed.
